While researching various stances on guns in our country, you and your group will also understand the purpose and role of interest groups and the media on issues in our country.
The Great Gun Debate is not something new. For hundreds of years, our country has been divided over the idea of the Second Amendment - the right to keep and bare arms (an raise a militia). Have times changed? Should our country too Based on your individual opinion, you have been grouped with like minded individuals who you will work with to construct a viable argument and research how interest groups and the media have impacted your stance. Be sure to use the following links as addition research. You will create a visual aid with all of the information and share it with Ms Corcoran by [email protected] by the end of the day Tuesday, Sept. 30. On Wednesday, October 1, you and your group will present your argument and take place in a mini debate session. Be prepared to answer questions and rebuttal any challenges that may come your way. Good luck! WHERE DO I GET INFORMATION? These links are simple resources that I have found through Google Searches. You need to CITE them in your presentation. These links do not mean that they will have the answers to all the questions. You need to conduct research on your own as well. Each assignment is independent of the other two and will be graded separately. Take your time and work through this assignment as it builds on the previous element The Role , Goal and History of political parties Along with political socialization and political ideology (click here), we have started to discuss the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Today we viewed a fun video that shows all the major topics of today's lesson. In addition, I have attached the video and the history of parties chart. Below, you will see how the parties split and eventually became the Republicans and Democrats in the 1800s. (the simplified version) THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF 9/11 Today we reflected on 9/11 and tried to make sense of the issues surrounding our nation today. We looked at a video of when President George W. Bush found out that the towers were hit as he reflected on the past. We also watched a video of a girl who was a student during 9/11 in New York City. She remembers where she was and what happened on that day. Finally, we watched a video to help us understand who ISIS or ISIL is and where they came from. While ISIS/ISIL was not a focus on today - the issues surrounding our nation and our course of action is confusing unless we take a closer look. If you want to know why ISIL is being used instead of ISIS. I have also attached the video of President Obama's speech to the nation last night too. They are writing a letter that parallels the four parts of our Declaration of Independence. We spent most of our class today writing a rough draft and you can either type it or write it. If you want to share it with me on GoogleDogs - [email protected]. We also watched this spoof of the Declaration of Independence: COLLEGE PREP: In our college prep course, we have moved on from our Declaration of Independence to our first attempt at government - the Articles of Confederation. That did not work out too well....no leader?!?! no way to raise money??? a weak central government!!?!? Instead, we needed something new. So we created the Constitution. We talked a little about what exactly went into the making of this document. One of the things you are going to do next is to do a scavenger hunt to find out what they actually are talking about. Use the following link to access the various parts of the Constitution. It will have the regular language that they wrote as well as the meaning. http://www.annenbergclassroom.org/page/a-guide-to-the-united-states-constitution The following infographic may also help you to understand how this all happened. |
